The Royal Wrap: Reimagined

Updated: 7 days ago

We all try not to play favorites.

Parents with children, teachers with students, even artisans with customers.

But I can't help it. The Royal Wrap is simply my favorite.

It has been for a long time. I released the original tutorial 14 years ago...

In the video (which has over 800K views on YouTube), I used a triangular scarf made of stretch charmeuse. Such scarves are hard to find these days. And most gals don't have the time or patience for fussing with an underscarf.

So basically, we need a refresh.

The tutorial below features 3 updates. First, it features a square scarf, since they are much easier to find. Second, the scarf is tied over a lightweight cap instead of a layering scarf. Third, I used sewing pins to make the whole process easier.

I began with this lightly padded undercap, and then tied a square cotton scarf. I love the tonal brown print and scalloped crochet edging.

Because the scarf measures only 28"x28", there isn't enough fabric to tie the ends in the back. So instead of making a knot, I secured the ends with silk sewing pins.

If brown isn't your thing, the scarf comes in over a dozen other colors, including black & white, watercolor pink, and 'lily of the valley' green.

I styled the headwear and earrings with a shirtdress from Banana Republic. You can find a similar one here (XS-XL). The faux topaz leverback earrings add a finishing touch.

If you love vibrant color, consider this next scarf. It's also 100% cotton, and has an energetic paisley print. It's measures 38"x38", so you can easily knot the ends in the back.

I added a black seed bead headband, tucked in just behind the drapery folds. This ruched bamboo-rayon cap underneath the scarf adds soft volume.

Silk triangle scarves

While I have been styling my beloved Royal Wrap with the square scarves above, I haven't given up on tying it with triangles. My favorite place to shop for triangle scarves is the Ann Taylor website.

I recently ordered their 100% silk triangular scarf in a black watch tartan print. The other ones below are worth a look.

May you feel like a royal in all of your headwear.
