Messes of Tresses

January 4, 2018

Happy New Year! Let's all make it a great year--and how about some great hair, too? Your locks can really get roughed up from constant covering, especially if you're wearing hats that are too tight, or headwear with combs and clips that snag. Thus, today's post: pro tips from New York hair and wig stylist Rebecca G. Here's what she has to say about the benefits and special care of hair that's consistently under wraps.

The advantages of hair covering

"Your headscarf goes a wonderful job protecting your hair from environmental stressors like heat, sun, wind, and humidity. Your hair has a natural shine, and the scarf helps to maintain it."

Special needs

"The needs of covered hair and not much different than usual. Your color can get a bit dull, so air out your hair on a regular basis. Keep in mind that you should continue trimming your hair regularly, just as you would if you weren't covering it. Trimming every six to eight weeks will stimulate fresh growth."

Squeaky clean

"I recommend changing your shampoo every time the bottle runs out. Your hair adjusts to the formula, and after a while it can become less effective."

The ideal hair length

"As long as you'd like! Ponytails and hair buns are a big part of wearing headscarves."

Suggested maintenance

"Apply conditioner on the ends of your hair only to prevent the roots from getting greasy. If you color or highlight your hair and show roots in the front of your scarf, make sure to keep up with it on a regular basis. Ultimately there are no set rules; it's all about what works best for you and your hair type. Covering your hair may not be easy, but it's a beautiful thing."
