Luxury Straw Berets for Summer

Designer hats from luxury brands are a world apart.

They often feature natural materials like fine raffia, silk abaca, and Italian leather. The craftsmanship and design details surpass their mass-made peers.

And the best part: the creativity. The color range. The unexpected.

Today’s article will focus on the unexpected.

Specifically, the combination of a classic French beret shape with summertime straw.

Beret: DIY with raffia yarn, this blue metallic thread

Earrings: Etsy / Necklace J.Crew, similar here and here

I conjured this metallic straw beret with a few hours and some humble materials.

I used raffia-cotton yarn from Amazon, and this metallic crochet thread by YarnArt. Both yarns come in dozens of colors!

I used this 4mm crochet hook, and 1.2mm elastic cord.

After the crocheting was done, I stitched black cotton twill tape (also from Amazon) along the inside edge.

This makes the beret comfortable to wear over the forehead. It also protects the hat from makeup and sunscreen stains. (See the second photo below)

This beret also works as a full-coverage hat.

Basic instructions:

Row 1: Magic circle, 6 single crochet in circle (6 stitches)

Row 2: Working in a spiral. 1 single crochet inc in each stitch (12 stitches)

Row 3: (1 single crochet, 1 single crochet increase) x 6 (18 stitches total)

Row 4: (2 single crochet, 1 single crochet increase) x 6 (24 stitches total)

Row 5: (3 single crochet, 1 single crochet increase) x 6 (30 stitches total)

Continue increasing the circle until the diameter measures 5.5 inches

Then work even (1 single crochet in each stitch) for 7/8" (about 4 rows)

For 2 inches (about 9 rows), alternate: one row of 6 decreases per row / one row of working even

In the last row: 1 single crochet in each stitch loosely over elastic cord

Weave in ends. Try on hat, knot elastic ends to desired tightness.

Enjoy!!
