Updated: Jul 17

Skirt: Esteez (sizes 2-18) / T-shirt: Amazon Essentials (XS-6X) / Scarf: Melifluos / Shoes: Calvin Klein

What doesn't match with denim? Add just one denim skirt to your wardrobe, and you'll have dozens of new outfits. Add stretch, and you have a must-have staple.

Popularized by Christian Dior in the 50s, the pencil skirt is a modern classic. Stretch makes the pencil skirt wearable for today's active, busy woman.

6 Modest Stretch Denim Pencil Skirts

Scroll to discover 6 modest stretch denim skirts. All are machine washable, affordable, and size inclusive. Let's start with a styling video.

1. Allegra K High-Waist Stretch Skirt

Skirt: Allegra K (XS-3X) / Flats: Vionic

This high-waisted skirt by Allegra K features "whisker" fading and a neatly frayed hem. These details create a casual, youthful vibe.

The denim fabric is a cotton-poly-spandex blend. I find the addition of polyester prolongs the life of a denim skirt, and prevents fading.

The skirts are available in size XS-3X. The length ranges from 27"-29.5," depending on the size.

The skirt comes in 17 solid colors. Above, I'm wearing the color 'dark blue. I especially love the hot pink and peacock blue.

2. Same skirt, in black

Skirt: Allegra K (XS-3X) / Scarf: Iristide / Boots: Walking Cradles

Speaking of other colors, here it is again basic black. I've styled it with ruched leather booties for an edgier effect.

The skirt has a center back vent (aka 'slit'). If desired, you can stitch or safety pin it closed. You'll still have room for a comfortable stride.

3. Esteez 'Venice'

Skirt: Esteez 'Venice' (2-18) / Shoes: Vionic, similar here

This skirt lends a smooth silhouette around your hips, since there are no front or back pockets. Its stonewash denim fabric has a delightful 4-way stretch.

It's available in sizes 2-18, and measures 24.75"-25.75" long. I sized up twice for a roomier fit.

It's also available in solid dark blue.

4. Esteez 'Miami' skirt

Skirt: Esteez 'Miami' (2-18) / Shoes: Calvin Klein

This is such a fun skirt for late spring and summer, paired with a white floral top.

As a mom, I appreciate the hidden 'tummy control' panel inside the front. It has a slim silhouette, but still allows a comfortable stride.

The functioning front and back pockets are so useful. This skirt comes in five basic colors, in sizes 2-18.

Since the skirt is white, I'm wearing it with these beige slip shorts. You can read more about them in my article 10 Essential Underlayers for Modest Clothes.

5. Esteez pull-on denim skirt

Skirt: Esteez 'Brooklyn' (2-28) / Scarf: Vera Bradley / Shoes: Vionic

This easy, pull-on denim skirt gives you a smooth silhouette. It has a faux fly, and faux front pockets. Depending on the size, the skirt measures 24"-25" long. There's no slit in the back.

The skirt comes in nine basic colors, in sizes 2-18. I'm wearing it here in the color 'denim.'

I know it's not nice to play favorites, but this skirt is my top choice on this list.

6. Lexi 'Super Comfy' skirt

Skirt: Lexi (2-24) / Tee: Amazon Essentials (XS-6X) / Shoes: Vionic

Last but not least is this solid black stretch denim skirt by Lexi. It features gold topstitching, and functioning front and back pockets.

I can see myself wearing this skirt for a downtown coffee break with friends.

It's comes in ten other colors (eight solid, two print). They're available in sizes 2-24. Size 8 measures about 26" long.

The basic t-shirt

I've photographed these comfortable skirts with a gray heather tee. It's made of a soft cotton-modal spandex blend.

While it says crewneck in the description, I find it's more of a scoop neck. In comes in 24 fun colors, in sizes XS-6X.
