Headscarf Masterclass: How to Tie a Designer Turban

Let's get glamorous!

Here's a new tutorial for the pro headwrappers out there. It's the latest tutorial in my free Headscarf Masterclass, which you can watch here.

This look is inspired by a designer turban worn to the Metropolitan Museum of Art's 2009 Costume Institute gala.

I love how this turban echoes the graceful draping of the Grecian era. I've spent quite a bit of time digging up photos from all different angles, and tried many different methods of tying, twisting, and draping.

Finally, I've come up with a strategy for emulating the shape and overall effect.

Discover the step-by-step formula in the 2-minute video tutorial below. Then keep reading for scarf and outfit shopping links.

Scarf shopping

This turban is easiest to tie with scarves that are at least 16" wide and 88" long. Scarves this long are not easy to find! Keep reading for suggestions.

The affordable silk scarves below measure 90"x43". Just fold them in half lengthwise before tying.

California-based scarf brand Ovcio makes 87" long rectangular scarves. They're made of superfine cashmere. While they cost a pretty penny, they ship for free and can double as a shawl or neck scarf.

Fabric shopping

To echo the original turban, consider using a piece of gold tissue lame fabric. I recommended 2.5 yards, which gives you 90" of length. Cut the edges with pinking shears to prevent unraveling.

Modest outfit ideas

Continue the draping by wearing the turban with a flowing Grecian dress. Find stylish, modest options below for both misses and plus sizes.

I hope you enjoy this new turban technique as much as I enjoyed creating it!
