Kate Middleton is the ultimate modest fashion muse.

Her elegant monochrome looks have inspired many of my outfits. I've kept her style in mind for many shopping adventures, and most notably, sewing projects.

I love the Alexander McQueen outfit she wore to celebrate her first child, George. The undulating front ruffle inspired my handmade magenta skirt suit. I wore it to celebrate my 10th wedding anniversary.

Let's start with the 30-second sewing and styling reel!

The ruffle-front skirt suit

I made these matching separates with organic cotton from Cloud9. While polyester would be less wrinkIe-prone, I wanted to the fabric to be breathable enough for summer heat.

The front ruffle attaches with small sew-on snaps, including some fabric-covered snaps.

Because I I made the skirt hem more tapered than usual, I added a kick pleat with two layers of folds! I love the way it looks, and how it allows more room when walking and sitting down.

I drafted the sewing pattern for the top and skirt using this sloper pattern.

For a touch of royal sparkle, I styled the skirt suit with a caramel-toned Swarovski pendant necklace. It's available in several stunning colors.
