Autumn's color palette is a quiet thrill. Its muted neutrals blend into a crowd while lighting you up.

Earth tones like chocolate brown, brick red, and caramel are in stores year round. Here are my tips to wear a scarf with autumn colors in summer, winter, and spring.

This rectangular leopard-print rayon scarf is by Melifluos. Based in California, designed in Spain, and sold on Amazon, the brand is has become one of my favorites. The scarf has a cocoa-brown leopard print on a caramel background: two of autumn's quintessential colors.

(You can read here about Melifluos' gray leaf-print scarf, which I've paired with a 'huntress' outfit theme.)

The video tutorial

In the video below, I demonstrate how to tie the scarf as a two-tone headwrap. I used a solid brown triangle as an accent scarf.

If you don't have a triangular scarf, you can use a square one folded in half diagonally. The Scarf Bar has a wide selection.

Underneath the scarves, I'm wearing this velvet grip headband, and a ruched cap on top of a pleated volumizer.

Springtime: pull the pink

The scarf has flower-shaped flecks of bright pink, true red, and cobalt. Its cheerful shade of pink is perfect for a spring ensemble.

Amplify it with this flowy, long sleeve maxi dress (small-3X). The punchy color is reminiscent of Japan's springtime cherry blossom festivals.

Pull on the dress, wrap your scarf, and take afternoon tea under the flowering trees. Reapply Revlon's lustrous balm stain in shade 'sweetheart' as needed.

Summertime: add cobalt accessories

In hot weather, pull the scarf's flecks of bright cobalt blue. Splashes of it are centered in the scarf's floral motif. It is a most enlivening color.

MZ Wallace's quilted nylon sling bag in shade 'midnight liquid' looks positively electric. It coordinates well with this vibrant blue gemstone ring.

I'm also seeing the scarf with this rayon button-down midi dress. It has tiny tiger-like black lines on a neutral background. Who says you can't mix animal prints?

I find this kind of lightweight scarf already suited for hot weather. The open-weave fabric and rayon fiber allow your scalp to breathe.

In the autumn: pull the chocolate brown

In the pictures and video, I've styled the scarf with an outfit I often wear in autumn. I've pulled the deep cocoa color from the scarf to the wrap cardigan and crossbody bag. The cardigan is by Nine West, and has ties that I've secured in the back.

The leather crossbody by Oak Leathers has served me for many seasons. It has a magnetic closure, space for a smaller smart phone, and slots for payment cards.

The red ponte dress is from Express, and you can find a similar style on their website here.

Wintertime: add cozy knits and cherry red lip gloss

Before wrapping the scarf, I would wrap myself in this caramel belted sweater dress (sizes S-XL). Then I'd wrap up in a blanket by the fire.

This Jessica London cable-knit sweater dress in 'brown maple' (sizes 18-40) would look chic with knee-high boots.

All sizes can pull the scarf's cherry red accents with Lisa Eldridge's lip gloss in shade 'ribbon.'

The Jewelry

The coppery tones of rose gold can bring the fall palette to any season. I've bejeweled this outfit with my favorite rose gold leverback earrings from Amazon Collection, and a matching necklace from J. Crew (similar here and here).

Perhaps a fashion writer mustn't play favorites. Yet I'll confess fall's color palette is nearest my heart. May autumn's rich color possibilities warm yours, no matter the season.
